Reverse flow UGF

I believe that UGF's have generally been given a bad reputation by the majority of the aquatic community, especially when they're used to "trap" waste and debris in the substrate. However, I was considering using one with a reverse flow.

Basically I'd attach the output from my cannister filter to the UGF tube(s) so that the filter output would flow under and up through the substrate. My intentions are to help lift some (hopefully the large majority) of the fish waste up into the water column where it can easily be removed by the filter.

Has anyone tried such a thing?

We used to use this kind of filtration all the time years ago, albeit with extra current provided in the form of internal filters etc. Most of the aquariums in our shop are currently run on ug filters with no problems. Frequent cleaning is the key.
