SYNODONTIS ZAMBEZIENSIS FIND ?

Posted: 25 Jan 2010, 16:22
by syno-kev
Just been doing my monthly search for Syno-Longirostris in the North West area and found what looks like it maybe a rare find if its genuine ?,

it is at Fishinc Ltd in Sheffield ,
And listed on there Website as an 8 inch fish at £16-95 which seems a very fair price as it is one i have never seen before in the shops but i am guessing it will turn out to be macrops or frontosus .

do we have anyone on here from the Sheffield area that could check it out ?

just thought it maybe of interest to someone in here ?

kev

What is their website and is there a picture? In 1981 I bought what was supposed to be zambiensis. After years of trying to ID it I finally, with help from a German hobbyist, IDed it as macrostoma. It had a wavy pattern on it, the true zambiensis is solid colored, I think brown. My fish died in August, 2009 after I owned it for 28 years.

Take care,
Tom

I actually have an old printed (!) photo of S. zambeziensis back at home (UK).

I didn't realise we had no photos of this species in the cat-elog, so I'll dig it out next time I'm back.

:D

Was there at the weekend, did not notice this fish, it is worth noting
their website is often really out of date.

They had multi's dhonti's and petricola in stock. Ring them up ask for Lindsey, he is a knowledgable bloke and their fish are really good. If they still have the Zambeziensis in stock and you want me to have a look let me know.

Rich.

Oh and hello, have "lurked" on here for years, just never got round to registering.

Thanks, had had a super Granulosus in which I was tempted by, my tank a bit small so have 4 petricola's (I think).

Worth seeking out Lindsey, he seems to be able to get unusual stuff, not the most celubrious shop, but the quality of fish makes up for this in my opinion. If African cichlids are your thing this is a good place to go.

Rich.

Zambeziensis sold a while back :(

what a nice chap Lindsey is though  & he knows a LOT about rift cichlids

The shop had a great selection of trops inc a large greshoffi & some real nice nigriventris (good price)

The tang synos were nice too - the granny had just been moved & reacted badly so not lookin it's best (forgot to find out how much). The multis were good, the "dhonti" seemed to be half multis & half the undescribed species i have seen before as "dhonti small spot" - extremely nice fish & rare as rocking-horse poop. The one lot of petricola were Hybrid2's & the other lot labelled 'wild' were a Lucipinnis & an unidentified one which looks like the fish in the Tanganicae thread - well worth a visit if you're in the area & he's adding another 100 tanks soon.

I pop in there regularly so will post on here if he has anything interesting in (although I am not that knowledgable). I have just set up a Tanganyikan tank and have bought all my fish from there, including 4 petricola's (think 2 are lucipinnis).

Probably the best aquatic outlet we have in S Yorks, not that well advertised I only discovered it last year and only live 6 miles away.

Snap- it's also about 6 miles from me, plus it was the first shop to sponsor our local aquarist society. I don't get in very often due to never having any free tank space, but agree that Lindsey's a very interesting bloke to talk to. I get a little frustrated that the tanks are never labelled up to date, and there's a few too many Malawi/Tang tanks for my liking, but I think he's addressed that by expanding into another room.

And bringing this back onto the actual subject, I've got the leads on some S. zambeziensis photos (unfortunately "pickled" ones from a museum, but better than nothing...)
