My new aquarium!

After months and months of planning I finally have my new aquarium up and running!

Equipment:

140x50x35cm (around 200L until I sort out the overflows) Custom made open top aquarium with 2x 1" side drilled bulkheads.
100x40x40cm (180L approx) Ehiem Scuba aqaurium (as a sump)

Total system volume approx 380-400L

Fluval 405 external filter with matured ceramic biorings, ehiem biological media (Coco puffs!), Fine filter floss, peat and the biological/mechanical sponges which come with the filter

2x 300w RENA smartheat heaters

Arcadia 3 series overtank light (over the 180L)

DIY stand using 50x50mm wood and 8mm MDF topped with 10mm polystyrene and butyl pond liner (to protect MDF from spillages)

Soon to add fluidised sand filter and 3000Lph "wavemaker" circulation pump in the 200L and some form of lighting (I may use LED wall lights or pendants hung from the shelf above the aquarium.)

Aquascaped using dark rounded slate pebbles and boulders, senegal sand and vine wood

Water is approx 80% RO water and 20% tap water (I will no longer be using tap water as our local pH is >8 and I only used it innitially to top up.)

Water perameters currently stand at:
NH3 0ppm
NO2 0ppm
NO3 10ppm
PO4 0ppm
Ph 7
GH 40d
KH 30d

(tested almost daily)

The tank has been running 2 weeks (1 week empty, 1 week at current stocking) the filter media was matured over 2 months with pure ammonia and supplimented with just about every "bacteria" suppliment avaliable and mature media from numerous systems.

Current stocking is:
200L:
2x L066 (Male + Female)
3x Apistogramma viejita (Male + Female breeding pair + another female)
A few Cryptocoryne crispatula var. balansae not really biotope specific but as a big planted aquarium guy I could never set up a tank devoid of flora, I opted for this plant because apart from being my 3rd favorite plant! It really suits this type of environment, low light, low nutrient (Liquid, substrate AND CO2) as well as tolerating high flow and a wide range of parameters… It also looks really really cool!

180L:
Empty and completely undecided as to how to aquascape or stock!

Soon to be added to the 200L
Leporacanthicus galaxias (Full grown adult male in 2 days time!)
Corydoras sterbai large group approx 10
A shoal of tetra (Species yet undecided)
More L066

I like to keep records of all my aquariums at home, college and work that I have set up over the years in the hopes that one day I might get around to putting a bit of a portfolio together and using it to somewhat further my career. Anyway without further addo some pictures for your enjoyment!

Firstly the DIY stand, I’m sure some of you will cringe at the thought of something so flimsy holding so much weight in an upstairs room but unfortunately I am not a carpenter and chose to do food tech (Home economics) instead of resistant materials (Shop class/woodwork)!! However I was present when this room was being constructed and have also been congratulated on my handiwork by both my father (An experienced tradesman) and a close friend a very skilled carpenter who are both a lot more confident than myself in its stability! Its also pretty ugly for something that is located in my bedroom (at the end of my bed to be exact) but considering the usual state of the rest of my room which is constantly covered in aquatics equipment, buckets, empty aquariums, sand and gravel, fishing rods, clothes and various other junk I decided do save my budget and just create something functional which does what it needs to do and makes the most of what little available space was available rather than being a pretty piece of furniture!

It’s a bit difficult to get decent pictures with the camera I have especially as I currently only have an 18w clip on light over the aquarium as illumination until I sort something better out. The aquascape is also far from finished but as with all my aquariums that would be an on going thing anyway.

L066 drip acclimatising, I have yet to get a decent picture of these guys in the tank because of the light but they do spend a fair bit of time out in the open and feeding now they have been in for a week and the male has already selected his cave of choice!

With fry in the soft water system at work whilst I was building this aquarium! Male and female both guarding and showing VERY vibrant breeding colours, especially in the case of the female! Unfortunately despite numerous spawns in various aquariums I have yet to raise the eggs or fry past 10 days.

Image
The Leporacanthicus galaxias at work I intend to spend my hard earned Christmas money on! (Can anybody confirm he is infact a Leporacanthicus galaxias and male?)

I will update soon with more pictures when hopefully I get some more stock and also some decent lighting over the main aquarium!

Looks great! I am really liking these new styles of tanks in Europe with the all glass top rim and open top design.

very nice DIY stand!
it actually does no look that ugly at all. if you had some doors to no show the sump and filter i think that would do just fine!!
and it seems like your one of those people who likes atleast a tank to be in your bedroom!!!
same with me! but ever since we redid our house by changing rooms (long story) i had a nice long room to fit a small community tank. but now im living upstairs in a tight bedroom..i was reltuctant to move rooms but thhat meant i have to live down stairs with my sis

any way off topic that so in the end excellent tank and stand!!

Looks nice indeed.

I've just finished cutting one leg off my water storage stand, which holds my 2 x 25g RO water storage. I will then be able to move some other bits around, and get the 320 liter tank I got off Martin S into the space under the water storage.

Looks good - I can never seem to find wood like that as love that look. Look forward to seeing more pics as it develops.

Nice fish - it does look very much like a , though can't quite make out the hook on the top of the head, but maybe it's just that angle of the photo. I've got a german book on Catfish (a present from Marc), and there is an image of a fish listed as L. galaxias, that is the spitting image of your fish, but you can see the 'hook'. Whatever it is, nice fish - what sort of size is it? I also can't make out the spines on the leading edge of the pectoral fins that would help confirm the sex as male, but that's not to say it's not.

I think its a girl! (Can anybody confirm or dispute the sex?) Approx 10-12ins, settled in 2 days ago and has taken up residence in a 4inch PVC pipe cave in the centre of the aquarium, could really do with a few other caves but it is difficult to accomodate so many large caves for only one large fish. I will get onto making a few large slate caves once I have got the fish more settled in and rescape the tank a little more in the near future.

Looks very nice. Where did you get it from?

I'm thinking I'll get a group of L240 for breeding.

What kind of stones are used in the tank :?:

Those stones are collected from a local beach, they are actually slate/shale that has been rounded off in the surf and some very nice uniform round black/grey pebbles and flat rounded yet almost squared bolders can be found. Unfortunately I cant publish the location as it is part of a beautiful protected and valuable marine reserve.

I'm pretty sure it's a girl, based on the lack of odontodes, and bristled edges to the pectoral fins, though think Farid or Haarvard may be better placed to confirm the sex.
Still, a nice fish, and at 10-12", a good size too.

Bit of an update, finally got around to installing some lighting and putting a shelf up above the tank! Lighting is 2 cheap celing lights from ikea each with 35w directional halogen bulbs mounted on the shelf above. I quite like the yellowish colour the halogens give the tank but I have replacement 1.2w LED bulbs in the post to save on energy costs... 210w of light is a bit much for a tank of this size when it doesnt contain plants, cant see algae being a problem with halogens but they are not exactly the most energy efficent bulbs when it comes to light output and there is no point wasting the worlds energy!
Also introduced some cardinal tetra as dither fish and to provide a little colour and interest and also 7 Stiphodon gobies (can anybody ID the exact species?) I know these arent exactly native to South America but they make for an interesting introduction!

Anyway, new pictures now with lighting:

Currently doing 25-45L water changes daily or every other day with ice cold RO directly into the sump, it only drops the temperature about 1c but I’m hoping the regular daily feeding with quality food (Prawn, Courgette, live bloodworm, mysis, muscle, brine shrimp and Garlic, algae wafers and high protein catfish pellets) in combination with regular small water changes with soft cold water will get my L066 and Apistogramma viejita to spawn sometime soon. Iv found in the past that regular live food conditioning seems to be one of the biggest spawning triggers with my Apistogramma viejita and hope that will influence the L066 into spawning as well.

A few new photos now I have a half decent camera!

Image
Image
Image

Some full tank shots

I now have a few house plants on the shelf above, Variegated English ivy and devils ivy hanging down and also a low growing creeper in a planter on the windowsill to the right. My plan eventually is to attach planters to the wall behind the tank and on the floor to the left combined with the plants growing from the shelf should give a much more natural 3D effect almost like my own terrarium/pond in my bedroom!

Image

Another shot to the left of my aquarium to emphasise its location and the fact that the rest of my life outside of my aquariums is totally disorganised and in disarray!

Image
Image
Image

Another shot of an Aphisto female, I am totally fixated by this formation of 5 rocks, notably the front 3 rocks and have probably taken more photos of this than anything else in the tank! It also makes a great backdrop to take photos of fish against!

Image

Some very greedy cardinals!

Image

One of the 5 Steatocranus tinanti I introduced last week, they still spend a lot of time hiding in the rocks but like the L066 they are starting to get a little more confident with my presence especially at feeding time. The Leporacanthicus galaxias is still yet to leave her cave whilst the lights are on but is more than happy to explore once the tank and room are completely dark.

Image

Lastly the smaller of the two L066, very fat, greedy and much more confident than the larger L066.

The tank is beautiful, you have quite an eye for aquascape. Have you thought of putting down a piece of slate and creating a cave over it using the nice stones you already have? Those square slate caves will stick out like a sore thumb against all those smoothed stones.

One other observation, you need to make your bed, I bet your mom would be shocked to see those pics X_X
