I have just received a pair of from a dear friend. He kindly let me borrow them for some time to attempt breeding them.
Both sexes are 100% established. The male measures 21cm tl and the female is 19cm tl. The male has odontodes around the caudal peduncle.

Yesterday I put them together in a 200 liter tank measuring 100x50x40cm with sand, rocks and a single very large slate cave. Today they share the cave, and definetely seems to show breeding behaviour. This is very exiting.

This is the female... I will try to make some photographs of the pair inside the cave later this evening.

according to the catelog, if you do manage to breed them, you'll be the first reported person to breed them!!

there was a number of spawnings of this species in Germany and Switzerland. But if nothing new happened I´m not informed about, no one ever managed to get them to hatch. The eggs always turned bad and/or were eaten by the male.

So if you really manage to get them hatching at least, you´ll be the first..

I thought I had arrived to late in the pleco keeping hobby to be the first to breed anything that beautiful. Being the first is not important, but it would be kind of fun.

When the eggs are laid I will hatch them artificially with Methylene Blue, and hopefully get some result. The pair is still in the cave. The male don`t seem to hurt the female like Leporacanthicus or Pseudacanthicus species sometimes do. This makes me more at ease as I don`t have to worry about her health.

The female forced herself out of the cave, and seconds later forced herself in again. There is an increased level of activity in there

Haavard,The female don't looks ripped with eggs on the first pic... maybe there are some weeks between the photos? If not you need to feed them little extra, it does look promising

The eggs have been moved to a 19 liter with heater and air stone. I added 4 drops of Methylene blue to the water. I think there are around 50 large yellow eggs.

Daily picture updates will follow including one more tonight.

This species is one of my favourite L-Numbers.
I told Udo before he should breed them at last.
I keep my fingers crossed. Next year I would like to see the fry.

We are not there yet. As I understand these are very sensitive eggs. Thats why I had no doubts about stealing the eggs. Especially considering my high ph.

I always use a net where I place the eggs hanging down into the hatching container with an airstone or the inlet of the water sligtly move them a little, I found it difficult to place them at the bottom much more sensitive to fungus. I move the net every day turn the eggs around, sometime a few eggs is attacked by fungus but mostly all eggs hatch and I release the fry into the container. Desinfect the net if you use an old one before you place any eggs inside (chlorin works).
