Hi,

Could anyone confirm if these two are male and female or both the same sex.

Any chance the fish on the right is Male? The head shape is a bit wider but I think I am kidding myself.

Thanks

I agree, looks like two females, almost certainly.

Even if they are opposite sexes, I would not try to breed these two together: The size of the spots are clearly different, and even if they are the same species [plausible], they definitely aren't the same regional variant [unless someone can confirm that they really are living together and spot size is just a natural variation]. The one to the right is Panaque albomaculatus, the one on the left looks like a very recent L-number [from memory L437, but I could have that wrong - there is a very recent thread on the similarity/difference between these two in this forum].

Hi Mats,

..I believe you are referring to Panaqolus sp. "L 426" (or Panaque, if you wish).
However, I´ll have to disagree with that identification: to me those two look like Hypancistrus, something from the H. contradens/L201 group of species/varieties. That does not affect the righteous advice to keep them separate, of course!

Cheers, Sandor

i would say both are female but because of head shape, it could just be a very fat unfit male-which i highly doubt. what species are these?

I'll try to get a bottom view this weekend. They are hypancistrus.

But either way, it is not a "pair" suitable for breeding - they are two different species!
