Hi,

We've had a S. Angelicus for about a year and it's grown from about 1 inch to 5 inches in this time. Up until now its been a model citizen in a community tank. From the age of 2 inches to about 3 it was active during the day, but for the last few months it's ben hiding all day and only swimming around in the dark. All of a sudden it's become much more aggressive towards the other members of the tank and has killed 3 pandas. Is this sudden mood change typical of all angelicus or do we have a female with pmt??? She doesn't bother the ottos that regularly share her cave.

What other catfish could we keep that would be angelicus proof? Or would it be better to just leave her on her own? The tank is 5'X1'x10" (120 l).

Sounds like the angelicus is just being her normal self. Might be best to either keep her alone, or with other large, robust fish.

We had a syno angelicus for about 4 years with no problems, then all of a sudden he took a disliking to our big clown loaches. They were slightly bigger than the syno (about 7 - 8 "), but this didn't seen to stop him.

The loaches ended up getting terrorised, and therefore the whole tank got a bit nervous. We tried rearanging the tank furniture, which worked for a few days then back to the caos.

The syno's seem to get very territorial at times, apart from creating a large area especially for him, I'm not sure what to do. We ended up having to give ours away, ( I was gutted, the loaches were my wifes, and the syno was mine).

So sorry to say, it's quite normal..

I'd say it's only a matter of time before the S. angelicus finds out that the Otocinclus are not just for decoration and harasses them to death too.

Hi I think now is the time to change the fishes tank mates to something a bit more robust. We keep these with no problems by giving them plenty of rocks caves etc.Try adding some lge tetras, or some cichlids from lake malawi or tanginyika. I would hang on to the angel as they are one of the most striking cats available at this size. Good luck.

Thanks for your replies. We knew that eventually our angelicus would decide that she didn't like the idea of sharing a tank with anything else with whiskers, but thought that would be when she was a bit bigger. I didn't expect the territorial instinct to develop overnight. It's strange that no harm has come to the ottos, but I'm sure that will happen soon. We will definitely keep the angelicus because she has a great personality.
