Which Ancistrus please.

Hi, I bought these with the tag Ancistrus SP. They are only aprox 2 inch TL at the moment. They look different to Bristlenose's I have had in the past. Can anyone help.

Defintely not the standard ancistrus for sure, but which one I have no idea!
Am sure someone will be along soon to give you a better answer than mine!

The only info I have is that they came from a shipment from The Czech Republic, they did'nt know what they were. I bought six and they all show lots of white spots. They change from almost black to light brown. Growing very quickly. Thanks for the reply's.

I would agree with Yann - Ancistrus sp. `Rio Ucayali`.

They seem quite common at the moment.

The fishermen would probably call it "Green Spotted Ancistrus". It lives maybe a bit closer to Iquitos (further north from Ucuyali) than the orange spotted "Rio Ucuyali Ancistrus" . I guess its the same species.

What is the real color of the spots? Photos often lies when it comes to interpreting white spots. We cought the orange spotted as in the picture in the Tapaya-Samiria national park along Rio Ucuyali. The greenspotted we cought along the road between Iquitos and Nauta, and also in Rio Huallaga (these looked different in shape and general appearance)

Thanks Haarvard. They do look white to the eye, they could be a very light green. I have taken a few more pics. I can see a small amount of orange on the tip of the dorsal and tail.

I think these might be

Ancistrus hoplogenys

However, at this young age one would suspect a more distinct tone of orange in the dorsal.

I guess you will only know for sure when the fish are fully grown, as A. hoplogenys grows larger than most species of Ancistrus.

The smartest thing one can do to properly id an Ancistrus is to get the location. If location is not available the country of origin is a good starting point. It is usually available in the shop the fish is bought, but one have to ask the right person working there. Location, location, location...

These looks like peruvian, but I could be very wrong.

In my country (Czech republic) used to sell this catfisch as Ancistrus hoplogenys orange spotted and at this time it is recently Ancistrus sp. Rio Ucayali
for me it is the same
