'twas the night before Helloween and something bristly this way cometh.

I have had nothing to do with plecofanatics, but someone asked elsewhere, and the "whois" information indicates that the lease on the domain name has expired, and the name is for sale.
I have no idea who the owner of the site is, or what has happened to let it slip like that.

Yah, I get a page that list sports websites. Is "pleco" synonymous with some sports activity in Britain, Australia, or some other english speaking country. In the USA, to the best of my knowledge, there is no connetion between sports and pleco. Maybe just a stereotype that sports funs are "fanatics?"

Were I tempted to think of a sport in relation to pleco, I would have to start from pleco = fish with sucktion cup
Mmmm
I'm afraid none of the sports I'll end up are olympic

I'm sure that the page you get varies - it is a random pick from a selection. And the domain name is owned by a "cybersquatter", meaning someone who wishes to resell the domain name. The same as you'd get if you go to any other reasonable name followed by fanatics.
They may well use "googleads" as well, to make money from what they do. I get a blond girl wearing a rucksack, but I do think it varies.
Essentially, the original owner of the domain name got evicted for not paying the "rent", and now the equivalent of advertising hoarding in a shopping mall when a shop has closed down is there.

Having been a relatively active lurker on there before "the end", the site owner went AWOL quite a while ago - there were quite a few issues with people paying for premium membership but not getting the benefits because Admin wasn't there. Mods couldn't contact him and there was a warning from one of the remaining mods a few days before "the end" to say that the site was due for renewal so people should save any important messages etc in the event that it was not renewed.

MatsP covers it all pretty well.
Unfortunately the owner over the last few years has, for valid reasons, logged into PF less and less. Infact the last time he was online was back in February if memory serves me correctly. He was supposed to have allocated the relevant privelidges to keep the site up and running to the senior moderator at the time but the owner dissappeared before completing the task. Since then most of the moderators and even some members have tried to get in contact with the owner in order to deal with the issues but with no luck. Hopefully the latest issues will force the owner to make an appearance as it'll be shame to see it disappear, however there's no sign of him yet.

But besides what happened to the site,
is anyone busy with what is going to be done?
There is / was a lot off info in there...
we are going to wait untill a commercial company uses the url for its own redirecting purpose????
(p.s. with "there is" i refer to the google cache, no idea how long that is usable)

Aside from it not being available directly, the other problem is that the rights to that material belong to either the contributor or the site owner. Since the latter is unreachable, and often the former isn't directly identified [e.g. a user-name in the forum], it's hard to get rights to "move" the information elsewhere.

interesting.
That was rather an abrupt site ciosing. i just figured it wold come back and it was a glitch or something. I wasn't a member there but I perused the site often.
I hope drgolds article on the ich treatment and Cups ( I believe it was Cups) article on hypan I.D. can be saved or relocated.

Drgolds (drpleco) article was also written up on PlecoPlanet
http://www.plecoplanet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=648
Unfortunately that particular article from cup wasn't copied over.

and it's still available in google's cache,
if you search on the opening sentence.
http://74.125.77.132/search?q=cache:-vU ... =firefox-a
I made a copy for my private archive (evernote
)
Hope to be able to make a snapshot of some other articles.
So if you know any search terms for the pleco-id article... search it with google and hit the cache link in the results.

I hope the PF refugees will look to PC as a new home. The loss of material is a real shame and I think every author's fear when it comes to digital publishing.

Once I heard about projects saving on-line information, because information has gone missing
Perhaps somebody knows more about these initiatives?

OK, happy to put the drgold article on Planet, just need to be sent it from the man himself.
As to google cache, it's typically around 30-60 days before things vapourise although you will find things a lot longer on the
waybackmachine.
As to any other content, I'm not aware of anything functionality really on plecofanatics that isn't here but I am was by no means a regular user of the site. Would be happy to replicate same here if there is an interest and it is practical.

For the record, planetcatfish.com is in my will and I plan to set up a trust fund to keep it running long after I'm dead.

Sorry to go off topic but here is a link to Cups article being hosted elsewhere

it's good to hear you have this site sorted should the worse thing happen. Would really hate for this site to disappear like PF has.

Found that one this morning, but the latest crawl is of 2008 june.
http://web.archive.org/web/200806180645 ... atics.com/
And no way found to take a local copy of it... (untill I read that the site states it's content is not to be copied local)
For now I think it's just "watching the ship sink", with it's cargo inside.
It's focus on the other resources, PC and so many others, hopefully PF-dedicated users find their way...
Backup of online knowledge probably will be a conversation issue next month in Hannover, right Jools?

Yes, although I am so confident in the position of Planet, I forget that others would need to have their worries addressed.
If it's for local use only, you can easily create PDFs of articles you wish to treasure, but it's my plan to always make the online version the best and most up-to-date.

Can anyone explain why some people can still get in and post?
I received a pm (via email) and also had one of my posts updated. (as proof they could still post).

The only possible explanation I can think of is that its on a bandwidth throttle that means the site is up for until a certain amount of bandwidth is used and then down again. However this arrangement is usually monthly rather than daily. I'm not saying this is the case, just offering an explanation.
The only other thing might be that the owner is moving it or something but it would be a bit odd to do that and not tell anyone.
