SImilar to... entry in Cat-eLog datapage?

Post by MatsP »

I know, you don't have to tell me what a maintenance nightmare it would be, but would it not be a GREAT feature to be able to click on say and get from the database that another fish that looks similar is - or that LDA33 and L240/L241 are similar... Likewise for the P. changae and L206.

I just thought I'd bring it out in the open.

From a technical point of view it's not too hard. I mean what you are doing is saying for species X, species A,B & C are similar.

All quite simple until species X is synonymised with species A and C...

OK, it'll go on the back burner, but might be something I can add once the "my" stuff is "finished".

Sure, it's certainly not an important thing. I'm just a great believer in "say what you think about things, otherwise there is no chance of it changing".

And the problem with "what happens when species becomes a synonym of..." is no better than the case where someone has to edit the data sheet to fix up the manually inserted links - at least if the species is removed, the database can be automatically fixed up - which is not the case for manually inserted links [ok, maybe if it's a synonym, it will actually do the right thing and return back to the same page, but you know what I mean].
