Is there an explanation for the fact that especially (many) ariids have a lot of synonyms?

Re: Many synonyms in Ariidae
Just thinking, a species with a large area where it can be found has a high risk of being described more times. Further, some species are more diverse than others
Ariids life in brackish water, being very tolerant towards seawater, they might disperse much more easily then most catfish. Some species inhabite the pacifisc coast of the southern USA, untill the north of Chile - if I remember correctly. That is enough room for 10 synonimes, I'm afraid

Re: Many synonyms in Ariidae
That could well be the case.
Anyway, I was just muttering about the new Ariidae entries, but they're done now - except for two which I can't find as such...
