Royal Growth Rate?

Afternoon guys n gals,

My partner and I just recently aquired a Royal Plec and was wondering what their growth rate is as the species page doesn't say much about this. At the moment the size is close to 3 inches.

Also what is the usual asking price for these in the UK? I'm just being curious now.

Any help would be greatly helpful. Thanks in advance :)

I presume you mean some form of - they grow slowly in captivity (probably fairly slow in the wild too, but I suspect they have more available food and better water conditins in the wild and will grow slightly faster).

As to price, it's one of those things that vary greatly depending on the source and the shop. But I'd expect a 3" specimen to be in the £30 +/- £10 or so.

Thats the one Mats. Ok, so we'll just have to keep feeding and regular water changes.

I only asked about price as we paid £30 just under and didn't really know what the price range for these species. As long as we didn't get ripped off for this chap or chapess.

Congrats with your new royal, do you know which kind? Heres a link if you're interested http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/ge ... _id=27#151

£30 is the going rate at most normal lfs, I have seen them as low as £12.50 and as high as £58 for that size.

If you're new to royals, heres a good article about them http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/p ... cle_id=740

Mine isn't a true royal (L191- dull-eyed royal), which is more commonly available so probably cheaper, but was £12 or so at about 2" SL (I actually got it for about £8 store credit on fish I sold to the LFS). It's only grown about an inch in 10 months, despite feeding well- colleagues in my local Aquarist society have reported similar VERY slow growth rates, which I think are pretty slow in all the nigrolineatus complex.

That was a very interesting read.

The one we have is L190, I'll try to get some good pics of this beaut. I have a couple but not all too good so I'll put them up.

I've had my Panaque (see avatar; it's not technically a royal) for about six years and it's grown perhaps about three inches (from 6" to about 8-9").
