I'd say that those two L-numbers are likely to be regional variants of the same species, and it's highly likely that there is a whole range of colours ranging from the reddish L306 to the more yellow/brown L169. That's only a guess. But they come from the same large-scale river system.

Hi,

according to the width of the lines on the snout, this fish is most probably (my oppinion) not L 306. Whether it is L 169, L 2 or one of the other, similar species, I dare not say. My experience with L 306 suggests, that colouration is not the best way to distinguish this from other, similar Panaqolus spp., since that is fairly variable (and on pictures, it highly depends on the white setting of the camera, tannines and such stuff). The lines on the snout are much better for distinguishing L 306 from the other, similar species.

Cheers, Sandor
