Doesn't ring any bells & is not named in the "Checklist of catfishes" (p171)

Other lists mention it as originating from Guyana. If so, would be
.

Hassar richter does not seem to be a valid name - as a "current" or "synomym" - just to clarify that part.
I'm sure Silurus information is at least as good as what I could come up with.

When the importer referenced in this thread was linked to profiles on site, and I asked him if it was perhaps H. Oresits he imported, his reply was:
very similar to that species but is richter coming just north of it in Guyana (Where the other is Brazil) they are a super cool cat fish which really deserves to be in the hobby more.
even are schooling.
He replies that H. Richter is a valid name.

Looks like it is someones name, would it not have an attached ending if it was valid.
But regardless I have been considering snagging a few for myself.
To anyone out there who has kept Hassar what is their temperament and behavior like?
I really liked having some small Pterodoras granulosus for a few days while they were waiting to move on, and was thinking of adding some kind of Doradid (the Hassar size range is perfect) in with my L. oncinus.
What I liked about Pterodoras was the constant unhurried meandering around.

Before I risk making any bad blood by my assumption, I did not ask the importer explictly if it is the valid name; he states that H. richter is the name when I ask him if it could possibly be another species (Oresti?). His *exact* reply was quoted by me earlier in the thread. I just don't want to ruin my hobby relationships with poor choice of words in my posts.

Hey no worries...that is just technicalities, what it comes down to is they do seem like a super cool cat!

A great species to keep, active, shoaling, peaceful, interesting - if i had spare tanks this would be in one of them!

So it's been almost a year later since the last post on this thread! Quick question... i'm brand new to this site but i have two of these so called "hassar richter" also. They look identical to hassar orestis. I just was wondering if anyone has found any new info on them? I currently keep two in my community set up. Has anyone ever bred this fish or fish like it in an aquarium?

If they come from Guyana (or the Guyana shield), they are probably actually
- at least, that seems LIKELY from what I can find.

are great fish, but need a really big tank as they never stop swimming.
60" x 18" footprint would be a minimum I'd say.
They also need to be kept in groups too.

I just got one. You are right he never stops swimmimg but I also notice my turushuki cat which I special ordered together with it, swims similarly at night. I had more special ordered after I found out they like too school and. I will put them together in a 5ft 100 gallon tanks so they can shoal. Mikey at 50 Fathoms ordered it for me without either one of us having any info because he knows Im into rare fish. I will try and post video once the new arrivals start schooling.

Corydoras with personality. A group is about the same level of chaos as a bunch of clown loaches. Top catfish.
