Science News: Schilbeidae - Laides longibarbis

Post by Silurus »

Synopsis by Shane Linder

Laides longibarbis was previously considered a junior synonym of L. hexanema. Ng Heok Hee's studies have shown that L. longibarbis is in fact a distinct species. Laides longibarbis is presently known from the Mekong, Mekhlong, and Chao Phraya basins in Southeast Asia. Colour photographs as well as a distribution map are present in the description. At a maximum length of about four inches, this fish would be a welcome import to the aquarium hobby.

Reference: Laides longibarbis, a valid species of schilbeid catfish from Indochina (Teleostei: Siluriformes). Ichthyol. Explor. Freshwaters Vol. 10 No. 4: 381-385.
