Science News: Loricariidae - Loricariichthys

Post by Silurus »

Synopsis by Shane Linder

Sixteen species of Loricariichthys are currently recognized in South America. This paper discusses four of species which are found south of the Amazon basin and describes three new species from this area. Loricariichthys edentatus from the Province of Entre Rios, Argentina, L. melanocheilus from the Rio Uruguai basin and L. rostratus from the Itaipu Hydroelectric reservoir are described while L. spixii (Steindachner, 1881) is regarded as a junior synonym of L. castaneus. Members of this genus are typically found in large open environments such as big rivers and lagoons, usually over a sandy or muddy substrate.
