Feeling quite proud!

Just doing a last water change before i go on holiday. I had suspected that the pair of bristlenose Mats gave me had spawned (2 April), as i had witnessed all the classic signs but i did only have them for a few days Nonetheless i am a proud "father" of an as yet undetermined number of common bristlenoses. Not the greatest achievement i know as they are ridiculously easy to reproduce but actually my first ever successful loricariid spawning, & only my 5th ever catfish species to spawn. I do feel incredibly happy

I suppose the problem now will be what i do throughout the reminder of the year with a few hundred offspring......

edit: Mats - you were right about a % of the fry being albino

Congrats!! It's only "easy" if you've made a happy home for the fish, that's not always easy.

Thanks, i thought there looked to be 30ish but now ive had a good look, particulalrly at the roof, the cave is positively swarming with lil 5mm wrigglers. There looks to be approx 40% albino, which is something Mats predicted.

I make it they are 11 days old & i can't see any signs of egg sacs at all. They haven't ventured out of the cave but there should be enough algae etc to keep them going until i return

Congratulations. It is ALWAYS an achievement to breed fishes - no matter how "easy" they are.

I doubt my latest additions:

Corydoras robineae

are going to be quite as easy to breed But they look nice.

Robinae are oneof the best looking corys (IMHO )

Got back from holiday today & they're outta the spawning cave & all over the tank - stopped counting when i got to 80 - can't see 'em all length up to 10mm, albinos 45-50% of the total & on average, noticeably smaller than standard colored siblings. Popped in some green lipped mussel pellets & a longitudinal slice of cucumber - after 5 mins they were all over it like a rash

80! what a huge first spawn! At least compared to mine. Cngrats!! I love to see them all over the food!

Ok, so I'll take a little of Richards pride my way: The size of the spawn is because mum and dad have been "practicing" in one of my tanks for a couple of years. Mature male and mature female helps the brood size ;)

Still, Richard managed to get them settled into his tank very quickly (it's a MONTH todays since I met Richard at the CSG Convention, and he got the pair from me), and they are obviously happy about their new home.

Indeed, big and frequent water changes is a must when you have that many, if you want most of them to survive.

To be fair, they were in tip-top condition upon receipt, despite their "vacation" from surrey to wigan to warwick they settled straight away & were "at it" almost immediately - the male is quite big - one of the biggest i've seen & they are as Mats points out, experienced parents already - the perfect breeding project (just add water!)

Quite a bit of mulm on the sand so water change later today - no signs of any dead but the water looks less pristine than usual

I stopped counting at 80, there are probably quite a few i missed.....

Oo-oh was catching some fish i got last week housing for a friend & discovered my 2nd batch in a coconut shell, free-swimmers wih egg sacs - Mats, here i go.....
