i finally managed to get a photo of this unusual creature i think its a catfishof some sort

Banjo Catfish

Whichever banjo it is, it would be better with a sand substrate as gravel is unnatural for it & it won't behave quite as it should.

Looks like B. colombianus. I agree, it would be much happier on sand.

Are banjos sand burrowers? I thought they lived among leaf litter?

I think they generally live amongst leaf litter, but I have seen mine partly buried in the sand many times. I also have the same behaviour from my

Some do live in leaf litter but unless you are reproducing this in an aquarium, you are better using sand than gravel.

Exactly.. not many people reproduce the natural conditions - it's a bit tricky & you'll never see the banjo! Sand with perhaps a few already dead, boiled oak or beech leaves is about as close as we can generally get
