i finally managed to get a photo of this unusual creature i think its a catfishof some sort

Don't know the exact species but it is a Banjo Catfish

Whichever banjo it is, it would be better with a sand substrate as gravel is unnatural for it & it won't behave quite as it should.

Looks like B. colombianus. I agree, it would be much happier on sand.

Are banjos sand burrowers? I thought they lived among leaf litter?

I think they generally live amongst leaf litter, but I have seen mine partly buried in the sand many times. I also have the same behaviour from my .

Some do live in leaf litter but unless you are reproducing this in an aquarium, you are better using sand than gravel.

Exactly.. not many people reproduce the natural conditions - it's a bit tricky & you'll never see the banjo! Sand with perhaps a few already dead, boiled oak or beech leaves is about as close as we can generally get
