Science News: Clariidae - Two new Clarias from Borneo

Post by Silurus »

Synopsis by Shane Linder

Ng Heok Hee has described two new species of the genus Clarias from Borneo. Clarias anfractus is found in the Segama and Kalabakan drainages in northeastern Borneo. The males possess a white pear-shaped genital papilla. This fish inhabits slow pools of fast-flowing forest streams with a substrate of mud and substantial leaf debris. The fish were found living in holes in the mud. Clarias planiceps is known from the upper reaches of the Rajang and Kapaus Rivers in western Borneo and the Kayan River in eastern Borneo. This fish also inhabits the slower parts of fast-moving streams with substrates of sand or mud. The description contains black and white photos of both species as well as many line drawings of various characteristics including the sexual dimorphism of the species.
