Science News: Bagridae - Hemibagrus in southern Asia

Post by Silurus »

Synopsis by Shane Linder

This very interesting paper reviews the members of Hemibagrus known from southern Asia and recognizes five valid species: H. maydelli, H. menoda, H. microphthalmus, H. peguensis, and H. punctatus. Photos and nice drawings are provided for all the species discussed and the paper also contains various maps and line drawings useful for identification purposes. Hemibagrus imbrifer is described from the Salween basin, Thailand and H. variegatus from the Tenasserim River, Myanmar. Also, the status of the controversial names Pimelodus menoda Hamilton, 1822 and Bagrus corsula, Valenciennes, 1840 are stabilized.
