I currently have about 60+ albino BN fry. Tomorrow they'll be a month old and are currently about 1 inch long. How big do they need to be before I can sell them? I have several people that are really anxious to get some, but I don't want to rush it and sell them too soon. Also, they are currently in a 10 gallon tank. Would they grow faster if I were to upsize to a 20 gallon?

Okay...I just saw the other thread about BN fry size....
So about 1.5 inches would be good?

I will be driving them about an hour to their new home....at this small would they be able to handle the drive?

A story of HOW NOT to do it, but also showing the survivability of these little creatures. The main part of this story takes part about 4 years ago, when I had my first batch of bristlenose babies that made it past the first day (the very first batch became breakfast [probably some lunch and dinner too] for the goldfish that was living in the same tank - goldie got moved out after that).

My father-in-law had a new tank that had been up and running for about 6-10 weeks or so. He asked if he could have some of those cute babies. I bagged some of the bigger ones up, around 1" total length. This was around 4-5 pm. He put them in his van, and went off to an auction, leaving the fish in the van. It was about this time of the year - not sure if it was before or after christmas, but it was pretty cold. The auction finished around 9 pm, and he'd all but forgotten about the bristlenoses until he got home some half past nine. He took the bag of fish inside, thinking "they must all be dead, they aren't moving at all". He didn't quite know what to do, so he put the bag in the tank, left it for about ten minutes, and then let them go in the tank. They were pretty lifeless, but he thought "well, there's nothing to loose".

The other day, two of those fish spawned in that same tank in my fishroom. I took over the tank a while after my father-in-law passed away, maybe two years ago. They were among the only fish that survived the lack of maintenance that the tank suffered for a while after my father-in-law died.

So an hour in a car that isn't too cool or too warm should be fine, I'd say.

It's also worth noting that when fish is shipped from the wild, they are generally put in bags just like when you and I transport them from the shop. Ok, so they get a styrofoam box outside the bag to keep it the right temperature, and they are obviously packed by someone who (should) know what they are doing - and the bag is bigger, but so is the number of fish, most of the time.

Wow. Thanks for that story, Mats. I think that must be why I love these little guys so much....they are some hardy little suckers...literally.

Well, now I feel better about letting this lady go ahead and have some now. These babies look so small still, but then I have to remember that I am used to seeing the parents. I should be taking them next Saturday, so they still have a week of growing until they go to their new home.

Thanks again!
