am I doing this right?

Post by Fuzzypants »

I have an 8 gal tank with the following...

ph: 6.0
temp: 75
Hardness: Ordering a test next week
Water changes 10 percent every week
5 Adolfoi cories 3 males 2 females fed 2 times a day

ok so what I'm question is what I'm feeding them so far I've fed daphina, bloodworms and brine shrimp. Is there anything else I could give them that would be good? I've heard good and bad about tubefix worms so I'm unsure if I should feed those or not. And how often should I feed them?

Sounds about right to me.

I wouldn't worry about a hardness test - if your pH is 6.0 without any additional doings (e.g. adding half a gallon of vinegar, or a tablespoon of muriatic (hydrochloric) acid or other pH-modifiers) then I can tell you that your water is "soft" - lucky you.

As you say, ideas vary about live tubifex - I haven't had any for years, so I can't say if they are as bad as people say, or not.

I'd probably change a bit more water than 10% a week - my water changes are usually around 40-60% per week in most of my tanks (except the ones where it's automatic - there the rate is approximately 2-500% per week [yes, replacing all the water several times a week] - because I use the waste-water from my RO system, that would otherwise go straight into the drain, to automatically replace the water).

I would add a good balanced commercial food to what you are already feeding. You can't live only on ice cream and fish can't live only on treats either.

thank you guys for the info...

1. I have frozen tubifex would that make a different then live? Or are they both bad?

2. good commercial flake as in Ocean Nutrition? Tetramin?

3. If I do lets say 50-60 % water change every week will that make them breed faster? I want to "beef" them up a little bit before they start making babies lol

4. Final question (promise) what are some good books to read on breeding cories? I looked at the books section of this site but theres TONS to pick from.

I would feed the other foods you mentioned already before tubifex
2. good commercial flake as in Ocean Nutrition? Tetramin?
I would recommend a sinking pellet...NLS or Hikari in a suitable size

Water changes are always a good thing, you could even do that twice a week and they would most likely condition faster

You probably only really need one book, Ian Fullers book http://www.planetcatfish.com/books/book ... ticle_id=1
