Have been a Canon fans for years, but that new DSLR 5DII really disappointed me, Perhaps it is time to change my system to Nikon.

Here are some pics with my new toy, I am still learning how to use this whole new system, even though Nikon is more sharp, but I still like the color of Canon.

My girlfriend swears by Canon for digital SLRs.

Perhaps it's a case of getting used to it & understanding how to put it to best use to achieve what you want? I can't take a photo to save my life but i don't really understand what i should be doing whereas others take fantastic pics

Good lighting, good lens and patience are the three most important factors.

If you post some photos, we can probably tell you what is "wrong".

The 5DII is fantastic, by all reports.

I am not saying Canon is not sharp, but IMO, Nikon is slightly sharper. I still have my Canon gears and I still love it for portrait and landscape, but for fish and product shooting, I prefer my Nikon D3 now.

I said that 5DII disappointed me with its 9+6 focus point and are too close at the centre.

I'm sure that looking carefully, you can spot minor differences. However, I'm also convinced (from my own experience as well as others - I've spent quite a few years at www.dphoto.us where there are a few pro's and many high-level amateur photographers, both of Canon and Nikon brands) that any decent DSLR will take good photos. However, SLR cameras with it's freedom in choices of lenses and settings also allow the user to make a mess of things - using the wrong settings can make a complete hash of it. It is not entirely easy (if you have no experience in SLR cameras) to take photos of fish.

I have been using the same Sony 5 mp camera since 2001 (many of which are in the Cat-elog). I was due for an upgrade so I could take shots like the above.

Very nice. I know some people who have D80 and D70 cameras, and the results are very good.

But switching camera "to get better pictures" is a waste of money unless you KNOW for sure that the problem is with the camera - that is much more my point than one or the other being better. I also have a strong reason to stick with Canon - to replace all my lenses, flash guns and other bits with equivalent Nikon versions would cost at least 4x what a new Canon EOS 50D would set me back. And you really need to get something a bit more than "slightly sharper shots" to spend that sort of money. Sure I could get a little bit back on the lenses I sell, but nowhere near to cover the full cost of the "upgrade".

Mats, my good old Sony is now 7 years old. The lag is about two full seconds (making good fish pics of live fish very hard to take) and it is not an SLR. That Sony has been all over the States, Central America, South America, Europe, and southern Africa. It was a good camera, but it was long past retirement age. Jools had his SLR on our last trip to the Amazon two years ago and I was able to see what a massive difference a good camera can make.

And geotagging for crying out loud... No matter where I am collecting in the world I can tag every photo with geocoords! No more.. now was that the Rio Whatever in 2003 or the Rio Suchandsuch in 2006.

Honestly, I like both system and I am sure all system can take good pics. As I mentioned previously, I like Nikon for its sharpness to take Product and Fish photos, and I like Canon for its colour to take Portrait and Landscape shoot. I am not saying one is better than the other, but they do have difference in different occassion.

And you really need to get something a bit more than "slightly sharper shots" to spend that sort of money

When you are at a certain level, slightly difference does make all the difference. Money is another topic.

It is not entirely easy (if you have no experience in SLR cameras) to take photos of fish.

I am new to this forum, but that doesn't mean I am new in DSLR or Aqaurium. Here are 2 of my I. Adoketa taken by my Nikon D3 and Canon 20D, I wonder if I can post non-L pics here?

Maybe the reduced size that the picture shown here is not sufficient to see the difference, but I'd say both of those pictures are good. The first of the two zebra plecs look like focus is a tiny bit further away from the camera than in the second one, which will affect sharpness. But neither look like they couldn't be fixed up with a quick application of some unsharp mask (or even setting the camera to produce some more sharhness in itself).

i have some more really zoomed in to the point that you can trace the veins with your finger. Yes that red thing is the heart =p However i looked and for the life of me I can't find the close ups of the shrimp's heart, eyes, and or "brain".
