Fish sold as LDA16 in shops may well be Ancistrus sp(3) in the calico form. This note is correct on the date of writing in July 2008, where distribution showing A. sp(3) pictures are listing these as LDA16. A key to tell genuine LDA16 from sp(3) variations would be if they are captive bred or not. Genuine LDA16 is rare in the trade, and not known to be commercially captive bred.

And to clarify Sp.3 has "now" been identified as
as Dave suggested...confusing..yes!!

I have updated the "sp(3)" notes on LDA16 to now say "cf. cirrhosus" instead.

Hi,
this is a picture of a genuine LDA16. Depending on their mood they can be uniformly brown (as in this picture) or have a very dictinct light and dark pattern. But they don't have any spots, neither on their body nor in their fins.

And it is impossible to get hold of them. I've been trying for ages to get a partner for mine, but no luck.

That may have been what he bought them as, but it isn't what they are.

Indeed, however, we'd need to know for sure, but assuming it is, I'd very much like to use the pic.

Hi,
Sorry, I meant the LDA16 picture posted by sunfish. I've already got a few of the czech piebald fish you have, but thanks very much for the quick reply/offer.
Cheers,
Jools
