Looking through the Cat-elog, and doing lots of reading I got the impression that speciec of Plecos with 8 spines in the sailfin were rarer then those with 10 or more. Since reading this I have watched at all the stores I visit for this feature on plecos. One store yesterday recieved a shipment of common's of which only 1 out of the 12 had more then 10 spines. I picked up and closely checked each one and they all had 8 spines split at the end like the Hypostomus plecostomoides. Is the another common species that is similar these rarer types.

I wouldn't have thought that they are "unusual" as such - they are not traded very often simply becuase the common captive-bred ones are so much easier to get hold of and handle (they survive just about anything).
