I was looking at the new paper on Platydoras brachylecis and I'm kind of confused. The new species looks a lot like P. costatus and P. armatulus (which I already have enough trouble differentiating). What really confuses me though is that in the diagnosis it mentions that P. costatus does not have a midlateral stripe; isn't the line down the side a midlateral stripe? Or am I just confusing what the midlateral stripe is?

Plus, I'm not sure the Platydoras hancockii that they're describing is a lot like the Doras hancockii (Amblydoras hancockii) in the CotM; they talk about how it has a midlateral stripe but I don't think the even mention the marbled or mottled appearance, which seems strange to me.

Can someone help set me straight?

What we know as Platydoras costatus isn't the true P. costatus. According to the paper, the true P. costatus is almost uniform in color and is only known from Suriname and French Guiana. I am guessing that the attached photo (from Le Bail et al., 2000) shows the true P. costatus:



From my understanding of the paper, what we now call Amblydoras hancockii is reassigned to Platydoras.

Ah, fascinating. Does this mean that the species that we usually see on sale is actually P. brachylecis?

According to Mark Sabaj the "standard" striped Platydoras of the hobby is P. armatulus. But who knows, this may even be open to revision in the future...depending on where given fish(es) come from.

Interesting, considering P. armatulus has been a described species for quite some time and no one realized that it's the species that's actually sold.

Yikes! Looks like a lot of interesting reading for me.

Obviously L37 should be name Hypostomus faveolus
