I've recently purchased some of these with the L177 seeming to be sexually mature and whilst i certainly feel i know how to breed them any information is greatly appreciated as i've read Vires "tricks of the trade" i'm seeking fresh information for comparison to Vires and what i've thought of myself! As above i also have the medium spot red colour gold nuggets "rarer" that are also mature or close to fortunately both nugget types seem to have paired up (L177 guarranteed) which is the hard part there i'm seeking gh ph kh temp for both conditioning and triggering if possible conductivity also sought!!! As far as I'm aware, Larry Vires is the only one who has reported success in breeding of Baryancistrus. I certainly have had no success in breeding them.

What size are your fish - I'd expect them to be around 6-8" (15-20cm) to be mature enough to breed.

Can I also plead that you don't ask for information sent to you personally, for two reasons:
1. Someone else may have a different/better idea - but if it's posted to you in private, the other person may not feel that they need to respond to your request for information, but seeing a post here may well trigger a comment to say "I don't agree with that" or "I'd like to add ...".
2. Someone else may also want to know what you just asked for - right now, or in two years time.

Also, there is a perfectly workable PM facility on this forum, so you don't have to request that people send e-mails to you - posting your e-mail adress is just asking to be spammed by various companies selling various more or less legal products/services, and you probably don't really want those e-mails. [As this forum is public, there is nothing preventing web-bots from scanning every post for e-mail addresses].

Hi,

there is also a recent account of breeding B. sp. "L 177", published in BSSW Report. Key to success, according to the author, is unusually high water temperature of approx. 33°C, if I recall correctly. High oxygen content has to be ensured under such conditions, of course.
With general living conditions in nature in mind, that makes sense: Baryancistrus are usually found in shallow waters, where they can feed on algae all day, while these shallow waters can get quite hot (this also makes them comparably cheap plecos: easy to catch). Constant availability of food (vegetarian!) is also essential, since these fish should be feeding virtually all day (which is probably why most Baryancistrus don´t grow in aquaria).

G'day Jerry58, I couldn't let my stock go for anything and the frontal body scales aswell as the odontonodes defines whether the fish are actually adults, they are generally sexually mature at 12-15cm! As to where you might get some adults i honestly couldn't say unless you're willing to pay thousands for 4 adults. I hope you can find some (not mine of course) but they're very territorial and can fight to the death (common problem) in addition to whit they can die from transplantation (stop eating) gut bacteria dies then they do!!! Sorry but think you have the wrong idea I'm not looking for l177's. The reason I replied to your post is that i am very intrested in looking at what your adult l177 fish look like so if you have any pics please could you post them, I'm sure there is a few others on this site would be intrested to see them also.

Yes borbi is correct. I did manage to take a glance at said report. Further, Seidel reports another spawning in his BTN book.

the breeding of L177 has been done once, here in Switzerland. Ingo Seidel mention it in his BTN, as Jon said. And I have more information, because Yann F. knows the guy who did it... What seems to be key points are :

- "green" feeding available all day long (aufwuchs)
- very high temperature (around 33-34)
- conductivity around 700
- stormy flow directly on the spawning caves (the author talks about a Pump, directly directed on the cave, by accident)

One of these days, I'm gonna try that with mine... But I guess I only have mature males. The biggest I have are around 17-19 cm but turned out to be males... and I guess the smaller (10-12 cm) are not clearly defined yet...

I would just like to say thanks for pointing out the site,what a good read that was about the beautiful golden nugget.It is hard to come across sutch good information and even imposible if it is in other languages and loved the pics as well .
I know this might not help you,sorry but this could help others.
I like to search foreign fish sites and unable understand what they say.So if anybody is having trouble translating words on any site this might help you,
I use Firefox brouser and download Google translate and only have to highlight words I want to read,right click then left click on translate,shows in box ,if you want more (like full page)than shows in box left click on it and will show in tab at top of page, covers lots of different languages.Not sure if available outside the UK but you may have the equivalent where you are,I did not know about it and has helped me a lot and hope this info may help others on this site breeding any type of fish or like me enjoy reading about fish.Even works in Le Monde des Poissons chat on this site.

The conductivity thing is no typo...
The experience of Johannes is one possible way to do, doesn't mean it is the RULE for every successful spawn.
It just worked for him that way, and he share his experience to help other people, to give a possible direction...but never stated it is the ONLY way...
In breeding Loricariidae, there are many way...a lot of species are quite tolerant regarding different water parameters...some need drop of T° to trigger, other raise of T°, other need soft water etc...

Again, it is not because someone does things differently that it has to be wrong...
I am sure if you ask for the parameters of 100 Hypancistrus breeder, you might likely end up with 100 differents parameters...

So before lashing out at people experience, just see their experience as a starting point for others...it never stated you have to do the exact same thing to be successful, and at least they have shared with others instead of keeping it all for them.

Further to Yann's comments, I'd like to add that there is no "secret recipe" for breeding/keeping fish. It's very official that (most) fish needs good clean water, and to breed they also need to be in good "conditon", which usually means being fed the right things.

Some fish needs triggers to start the breeding process, as well as being in good condition.

The exact conditions that someone bred the fish in doesn't mean that this is "the only way" - as has been shown with for example Hypancistrus, they will breed in many different water conditions, temperatures and tank sizes.

Guys i wasn't lashing out i just didn't think the conductivity was right that's all. I just find it difficult to believe a link that says water hardness above natural habitat hardness, however that said if he did breed them that way good luck to him alls cool. Rohan Richardson

It's rather difficult to deny documented evidence, such as photos. Perhaps you should take a step in this proposed direction and provide your own documentation of your spawning fish.
