What synodontis am I? Aparantly wild-caught...

I'm not very good with Syno's, but assuming it is a genuine one rather than a hybrid:



If it's a hybrid, I'd expect that S. ocellifer is one of the parents.

Edit: is a hybrid similar to the above fish.

I can only echo what Mats has put.....Ocellifer came to mind if it is a genuine specie although it is not a typical example. That said if i had to say what my heart felt i would have said ocellifer x hybrid (ocellifer x eupterus). I could be wrong though, i often am!

I would say genuine ocellifer even though its humeral process is huge. Fish is still juvenile and juvenile ocellifer has big caudal fin as in pic. Also huge adipose fin fit to ocellifer. Maybe little bit more food and shape will look more ocellifer too . Now it's bit slender comparing "normal" ocellifer.

I really hope that i'm not wrong with this one, other option for this fish is swear-word for me .

I'm not an expert but I would say hybrid(1). There a lot of these around in the U.K. being sold under a variety of misleading names, like njassae and pardalis. Or just 'spotted synodontis', which at least is true. Compared to the real ocellifer, the spots are larger and sometimes fused together, and the colour is yellowish-brown rather than silvery. But I do realise that colour and spot pattern are not defining criteria.

And he was bought from a shop in southern spain that specialises in african cichlids, with the occasional catfish putting in an appearance...

It would be interesting to see if it retains the yellow tinge if it is wild caught, but I do not remember seeing any other ocellifer with fused spots, not saying it could not happen I just have not seen it myself.
