After having fallen in love and having bred loads of other fish (Apisto's, rainbows, tetras) I would love to give Pleco's a try and what better way than to start with the one I have

Panaque Maccus who I suspect is a male

To breed will I need a harem or a group or could I simply buy a different sexed maccus and keep them as a pair? How can a female be identified easiest of this species?

Many thanks in advance

So I was right with L104 - Panaque Maccus - phew

At what age can they be sexed and could I just get a female if sexable or do I need a small group to breed?

Many thanks x

Wonderful photos! :)

But Im not 100 % sure it's a male until I see a photo from above. Male grow lots of odontodes and I dont think it's a visible in those photos. Females are have no odontodes at all and it's very easy to tell them apart.

I have 2+2 P.Maccus and they have spawn two times now. A pair or 2+1 could work as well. I think the important thing is to provide a tank with lots of woods and suitable caves. They can be breed in normal tapwater so RO water doesnt seem neccesary. I also think it will be easier if you have this species in the tank. I have had small cichlids in my tank and they have never breed until they were alone.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer.

Looks male to me
Mine breed on a regular basis in a 6x2x2 with all sorts of other fish, L cats included.
I have a huge amount of wood/plants and 1.5 caves per adult catfish. It seems to be working as my 183 and 168 are also regular breeders in this same tank.

Brett

Thought I would give this another go now the L104 is older... and much much much fatter!!! How do you put a panaque on a diet? Remove all the wood? LOL

Majority thought male last time as did I but I am really dubious now...

Yes, I'll change my choice to female - although males are also capable of growing fairly wide, I'd say you need to find a male.
