Hi,
nice plecos. Very nice. I think I have the same kind here, bought as l 287 imported by Aquarium Glaser / Germany. I think it is impossible to identify them. Body shape ist like L 333 , but they stay much smaller.
Here is a picture of my finest male.

They look like L333 to me as well.
Maybe not as pressing as solving global warming or world peace but getting some names instead of numbers is something I'm looking forward to some day. Maybe there really are so many different Hypancistrus species as there are L-numbered ones but if I had to guess, I would guess that there are fewer species than there are L-numbers. Just extremely variable in markings both within local populations and from different river systems. There may be only half as many Hypancistrus species as there are L-numbered Hypancistrus but that would still leave us with many species. Symphysodon haraldi, the Blue and Brown Discus, and Symphysodon aequifasciata, The Green Discus are a good examples of just how variable species may appear within it's range.

Thanks for the reply,s people.
Does anyone know how many variables of 333 there are?
I now have 3 groups that have been id as 333.
The ones in the first post. Then these
Brown and white in colour.
And these
Yellow and black in colour.
They are all very different in colours but very simillar in coulour.
Thanks

First pic in your last post is L401 Hypancistrus sp that was exported as L333 H. sp "Alenquer" and the second pic is L333 the real one from Rio Xingu. The first pics in your first post I would want to see pics from a little more distance and not close ups, even if they look like L333 and I'm not 100% sure.

Hello Janne!
I am just curious what about these plecs in the pictures distinguishes them as L66 as opposed to the L333?

Their coloration and pattern together with their bodyshape, more elongated body (both is quite fat so the pictures fools you), lyretail, the stripes in their tailfin etc.
Compare these pictures with the other above that are "yellow and black" and you will see the difference, sometimes even the real L333 shows a black and white colouration but in that case you can see the difference in their pattern and bodyshape.
