Please tell me what helps you determine what type s/he is.

Before deciding, know that what appears white in the photo is actually reddish orange.

Based on color alone my GUESS would be a flash.

S/he has 11 rays in the dorsal, not including the leading ray.

S/he was with a group of Pterygoplichthys Commons as well as Hypo.Pleco Commons, so I suspect it is wild caught, and all finnage on the others it was with indicates the same. Its about 3".

L333? L066? Or L399/400?

The first one is definitely not L204, it's likely just a common pterygoplichthys sp.

Second looks to be what is sold around here as black and white L333. I'm not sure if that's the same fish as L401 or not, but I'd be curious to hear others' thoughts. Could be a very nice L066, too, but looks more like the 333 to me. Edit: what was it bought as?

I too would say "certainly not L204, but can't say for sure what the first fish is". It would help to have a clear picture of the dorsal fin so we can count the number of rays - that would rule in/out the Pterygoplichthys genus.

The first post suggests that there are 11 soft rays in the dorsal- I believe this narrows it down to Pterygoplichthys?

Too busy trying to see the pictures to read the writings... Yes, I agree it does.

Also, it's most likely captive bred if it's a Pterygoplichthys

I'm not so sure. I think, at such a small size, it is too hard to tell, and could be any of the commonly imported species.

You'll know for sure when it gets bigger.

well, in Holland we see these fish everywhere! being sold as Panaque maccus or Ancistrus species. always small in the shops, but will grow to 35 cms.

I agree, they are very common in the shops at the moment, but then so are , and at that size it is lacking the good distinguishing markings.
