Hello.
Does anyone know some handy tips for breeding the panaque maccus?
I got a wildcatch pair of these and after having them for more than a year i want to breed with them.
They are fully grown and its one male one female.
They are in a tank with other plecos now but can get there own if needed for breeding.

I got a ceramic breeding hole and a good Eheim
So whats to be done for a good pair of young maccus?

Greetings ilker

Have a look in "Shane's World" - there is an article by Erlend there which describes the breeding of these.

I have had two spawns from mine, but no fry. Using soft/cool water changes appear to make them more prone to spawning.

Hi,

I was lucky enough to have a few spawn of Panaquolus maccus.

About feeding, these fishes eat mainly wood. you can complement with spirulina tablets et sometimes to times with courgette (zucchini)

Spawn started in a tank with a good filtration and quiet a lot of current in front of the spawning tubes, in a quiet "old" water (I did not make huge water changes as I had a lot of evaporation : I did remove the biggest scrap on the tank bottom and complemented the water level for about 6-7 months). This was done with enough water ready to do a big water change in case of problem (water start to smell, film at the surface...).
I tried to keep the water temp auroud 24°C

About who is a male, who is a femelle... On the picture, you can see a femelle on the bottom : the body enlarges just after the pectoral fins. On the top right corner, you can see a male (see the difference of the body shape, and the presence of the small odontodes up to the caudal fin).

Still on the picture, there is a male and a grap of eggs inside the tube.

Hope this will help you.

See you,
Matien
