Young Aspidoras taurus discovered in tank

My son discovered a young Aspidoras taurus in his tank (Rekord 70), that is running since 6 weeks. In this rather dark tank with turf, Javamoss en Javawheat(?), Anubias, Echino, etc. he only has a group of Aspidoras taurus.

The little one is very lively when you see him grazing for food on a Echino-leaf.
We are very enthousiastic, and hope to share more experiences on Aspidorasbreeding.

Probably there were good hiding en waterconditions in his tank. It's a wonder.

That is cool finding one fry. I would try feeding them a small amount of live baby brine shrimp each day and be sure no other predators are present and I think the chances are good that more fry will appear. Make regular frequent water changes each week. I do this with Corydoras hastatus and their numbers are constantly increasing. They have their own tank except for the red cherry shrimp that share it.

Since a couple of weeks there was again some fry, 1 brave one, surviving in the tank and 8 in the breedingtank (3 bigger ones, and 5 small ones).

Tonight the 3 bigger ones went back to the tank of their parents, so there are now 4 reasonable grown-up young ones in the tank beside the 11 adults.

In de internal filter I found 10 very small baby-fishes. They were put into the breeding tank with the previously mentioned 5 small ones.

The parental fishes are continually spawning, every couple of days or week. Since tonight I did a pantystocking round the internal filter.

You should add the species to your My Cats page, then you would be the only keeper of . :D

@Loachy: How do I do that? Adding to My cats page?
@Kim> Thank you! Always nice to hear there are other Aspi-fans like me. Are your Aspi's also breeding?

These Aspi's have all the time eggs. Rather large amounts, while they do'nt get often frozen stuff.

You can put how many adults and the ever-increasing population of young there are. You can also add notes such as 'constantly breeding, I am very happy!'. :D
I keep so I know how much of a joy they can be to keep.

I post an update because I got an automatically generated post from Planet Catfish management (or how you call that) in which I was asked to tell if I still have Aspidoras taurus in my tank, or if not, to tell about the situation.

So now I give a update.

Since a little more than a year I have transferred my group to my big tank: Juwel Vision 450, about 450 liters.

The group is still rather big: 18 Aspi's, or perhaps one more. A week or two ago I saw them spawning again, but the Botia's and their own competetive females ate the eggs. But I was glad, because I had not seen this behaviour since the period in the Rekord 70.
Perhaps this happened because the large group of Cryptoheros Sajica's was (at last...) reduced. This species spawned for years very succesfully, I have given away to Dutch aquaforum visitors and LFS's more than 150, and since a couple of weeks ago I have only 3 adult male, and two youngsters.

Anyway my Aspi's are still going strong. They are vividly, visibale, and mix nicely up with my Corydoras sterbai (9), my restgroup Corydoras aeneus (3), and my (one and only since he came in my tank) Corydoras paleatus.

I have a fantasy, that when there are again new spawned eggs, I will try again to raise them. But for now, they are faithfull little catfishes in my tank. Their age about 4 to 5 years old. I think this species can become much older, like the Corydoras. So I can enjoy myself with them.

When there are new developments, like spawning, I hope to find the opporunity to update this topic.

Last saturday, the 6th of October, my Aspidoras taurus spawned again, in my big tank. Other fishes, e.g. Cryptoheros Sajica, were often faster than I was to remove them.
I removed about 12 eggs. After three (and four) days there were five little fishes. Ik feed them various kinds of products. Artemia nauplien, Liquifry, fine dry food for baby fishes, etc.

When they are bigger, I will try to make some pictures!

Two pictures, one taken two days ago from three of the baby fishes, and one taken yesterday from a group of adults in my big tank.

Only one young Aspidoras taurus survived.
The first two were very healthy in my opinion, when they died. I have always thought that de Artemia nauplies were contaminated. I then directly stopped giving that and gave them mashed tablets and mashed shrimp palets. Later two of the three died shortly after I had transferred them tot the 60cm tank. In this tank are Hyphessobrcon amandae and Neocaridia denticulata sinensis var. red.

That last exemplar growths steadily. He's very vividly. Hereby a small video of the youngster while searching for food: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQLtYhfsiHM (sorry, linking does not work on my computer)..

Since half March I saw after a weekend holiday 10 eggs of anyhow the species Callichthyidae. 7 hatched, and 1 died shortly after hatching. So 6 are growing up. Since Tuesday the are in a 40cm tank, and they seem to do well. After having given them very small food like A. nauplies, they accept tablets and crushed flake food in the meantime.
Hereby a picture of this weekend, 2,5 week old. I think for sure that they are again from my Aspidoras taurus species.
