Manaus 2003 Day 1
Well, I got uip bright and early and headed off to the fish market. Although the rainy season has just ended and the water levels are still high, still managed to see what I came for...large pims!
Pseudoplatystoma was common, as was Brachyplatystoma (two species...B. filamentosum and B. juruense, although by the time we got there, the juruense had their heads cut off). Also saw a fair number of Hypophthalmus, and a few Pseudodoras and the odd Phractocephalus. Not a good haul, but not too shaby either. Unfortunately, the Internet Cafe I am mailing from cannot take zip disks, so the photos will have to wait until I get back to the US.
Talks have already started, but nothing catfishy today. The good stuff starts tomorrow.
Shane, you may be interested to know that the Catatumbo fish book is being sold here, as well as another on the endangered fishes of Colombia. I am picking up a copy of each tomorrow.
Pfeil (publishers of IEF) are exhibiting and also selling reprints. I managed to get a good number of recent catfish papers (e.g. description of Parotocinclus jumbo, P. prata, the cave Ituglanis, etc.). Even my reprints were on sale. I had hoped to go home with lighter luggage, but all the books and reprints I am receiving/buying are going to add substantial weight to my luggage.
Barbie, the stingray T-shirt is all sold out. However, they are taking names for new orders...if they get enough, they will reprint the shirts. Want me to put your name down?

HH,
Please procure both the book and paper for me if possible and if you have space. Thanks and I wish I was there with you.

Barbie, please pm me with your contact details (name & email address) so that I can put your name down.
Shane, I will try to get the books, but the person selling them only accepted USD (I couldn't even pay in reais), and I had to borrow from a friend to pay her for my set. I can give you contact details and you might be able to arrange something. As for the reprints, which ones did you want?
Sorry for not making this a pm, but I don't want to use up too much time writing separate messages (this interent cafe thing is costing me).

Would like both the Catatumbo piece and the endangered fishes list. I should have sent you some money before you left!
