hi guys,
first i'd like to say, you people did a great job on the lay out of this forum!
i have a question for you guys. a friend of mine bought a nice suckermouth catfish for 8 euro's, the shop named it Panaque but i don't think it is a panaque, i think it's a peckoltia, and more specified i think it's peckoltia sp. L147:

do you agree? if not, what's the name of this fish?
(sorry for the poor quality of the photo)
thanks in advance!

thanks for the quick reply Jools!
i'm a bit confused now, because of the dotted pattern this fish shows. i always thought that the panaque maccus had more of a striped pattern on the head? this fish clearly has small dots on the head...
are you sure?

I would agree with L147, but a young one that hasn't developed the typical spotted pattern on the back of the body.

thank you for the reply!
i forgot to tell you guys, the fish is 5 till 6 cm now, that's like 2 and a bit inches?
any other ideas? all of the input is very welcome
my second best guess is peckoltia sp. L387
but i might be on the wrong track, so if you think differently let me know please

I am not sure as the fish is stressed and we don't have a picture of the mouth to show the teeth. However, I do not see a clearly spotted head pattern that I would expect to see in
, I see a broken, dappled patterning more akin to an adult female
and consistent with the size of your fish.

Your fish looks a lot like a young L147 Take a look at the second picture in the second row (sorry, don't know how to attach links).
I also doubt that you could get a L387 for 8 Euros.

How about taking another photo when he/she has had a few days to get comfortable? That way, the ID may be easier. I agree the young L-147's can change colour by the week. This was from at least a year ago, maybe longer:
Her colouration now is different. The orange stripes have just about merged with the brown. She's also grown about an 1" in a year and the odontodes are quite striking. I'm still not sure if she is she or he. You've got yourself a beautiful fish, any which way!

Technically, it doesn't have a 'sientific name' other than Peckoltia sp. as it has not been characterized and the results published in a recognized journal. But it continues to look like a young L147. Let's see what it looks like in 6-12 months when it has put on some growth.

It still looks like a
to me because of the odontodal growth in fish a fish of this size. I still don't see the clear head spotting pattern I would associate with
at this size. What makes you think it's a
?

you're absolutely right Jools!
the odontodes on the pectoral fins and the back half of the body are very panaque-like indeed
the 'spotted pattern' on the head seems more like a broken striped pattern, so this also points to panaque. the first pictures made me think of peckoltia, because of this 'spotted pattern'. the new pictures that i just recieved confirms the idea of panaque maccus. the small, spoon shaped mouth and the odontodal growth on the fish, must be panaque:
he/she (i think he) still looks a bit stressed, it's now four days in the tank. when it gets used to it's surroundings, it probably will show more colouration.
thanks a lot!!!
