Hi!
I got given a catfish for Christmas that was identified as a gibby, but I'm not sure if it is, it doesn't seem to match the colouring of the other gibbys on your site! (I got given quite a few different fish from my in laws! All a surprise! The gibby, a sucking catfish, a bristlenose and a tandanus, an albino cory, bronze cory, peppered cory, silver shark,clown loach, black widow tetras, rummynose tetras, and neons! They have stocked up my empty tank I had all set up and was just waiting til I could afford some fish!)
Anyway, I didn't know anything about half the fish they gave me so I've been trying to do some research, and I'm sure I'll need to get a bigger tank, as some of those get REALLY big, but I'm just not sure if it really is a gibby or not. The Pictures are not that great, haven't figured out how to do that yet! But I'll post them and if you want any more I'll see if I can get some clearer ones.

Pictures taken with cell phones don't make the job of identifying fish easy.

Thanks Silurus, but actually they were taken with my digital camera, not the phone, just not a very good camera, will have to upgrade I think. I'll see if I can borrow someone elses and see if I can get clearer ones.
Edit: I apologise Silurus, it was taken with the phone, had a look back and they were clearer than the digital camera, all the camera focused on was the glass! Do apologise. Will see if I can get the camera to work proplerly

I agree with Silurus, your fish is L001 Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus
but I couldn't tell from the first photos so Silurus is very good.

I had been trawling through the cat e log and had thought it might have been L164, just as the patterning around the face looked more similar, and the L164 kind of looks like it has the "stripes" that you can see on mine in one of the earlier (blurry sorry!) pictures. Have a look and let me know, I'm happy to go with L001 if you really think

I think you have a regular gibby ().

I've had both types in the past. Here is says that Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus (L001)
reaches a maximum size of 8", however, I would disagree a little and say they can reach
over 10" but not nearly as large as Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps which reaches around 18".
In addition, "Gibbys" usually have a larger dorsal fin than P. joselimaianus (L001). Either
way it will be easier to positively identify your catfish as it grows larger. I'm not an expert,
so I would definitely listen to the advice from Silurus. I do agree that the pattern on the
head looks more like Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps after a closer look.

I think I'll stick with the Gibby, and just wait and see if he doesn't grow more than 8"!
