my lemon spotted green pleco which i bought for $50 (singapore dollars) is dead.
i just found out 5 minutes ago when i pass-by while visiting the toilet.
it was caught in the input of my powerhead.
i bought it 1 week ago...
nothing of this sort has happen before, my L205s, royal and nugget which have been in the same tank for a couple of weeks to a month are fine.
now i have switched the capacity of the powerhead to the minimum.
any advice on what i can do to prevent this tragedy from happening again.

Did you observe any thing strange before it die? Like not eating or moving like normal?

Any defects on the body when it's dead? Like sunken belly or eyes?

Did you just get this pleco or has it been in your tank for quite some time?

What have you feed it so far?

nothing wrong or strange abt the pleco.
i bought it with the nugget and the nugget is fine.
it just happens to be exploring the powerhead.
before the pleco knows that he shouldn't mess with it...its dead.
my advice to all: don't mess around with your powerhead!!!
by the way, i read abt plecos being caught in powerheads in another forum some time ago.
i guess god is giving me a chance to buy a new pleco.

Sounds like the pleco has not been quarentine before hand! Some plecos might be infected with parasites and yet look healthy in the lfs, so its always good to quarentine them to avoid the risk of spreading any parasites to the other plecos.

I myself dont quarentine them (too lazy!) but I always try to make sure the pleco is healthy before bring them back.

Mangos are very beautiful but quite shy.The one in my sig is mine.

I found a mango for actually $15!!!! I couldn't believe it. If I were you, I would expect to pay anywhere from $20 to $50................................................................................. ................................................................................

der Ingo, thats a very good price you've got. Are all the plecos around that price range? Here in singapore, all the plecos are mostly above $40, except for the common pleco that is!

going to my LFS later to shortlist some of the plecos that i'm interested.

Hi, Caril. Your incident is actually common to plecos-lovers. But, i don't suggest u to turn the powerhead weaker 'cos most plecos do love strong water current. Instead, u may consider wrapping the inlet of the powerhead by sponge.

You don't have a plastic stuff in the intake of the powerhead to prevent such problem???
At least to avoid plants leaves, small piece of wood being suck by it...
Usaully all powerhead are sell with either some filtering material such as sponge or at least a little plastic deal that prevent from any thing being suck by the power head with the risk of ^destroying the powerhead.
Strange as usually these fish are rather strong and could avoid being suck by the power head, I would say it died before being suck by it.
You really should quarantine your fish before introducing it to a new tank, not only to prevent any disease out break but also to make sure that the new fish is doing good and eating well...

Around here L47 Baryancistrus sp are around $50 for ~10cm/4 inches
I saw one for $80 but was double in size!!!

i used a net and covered up the powerhead now.
and placed a few ceramic rings at the input.
it should be ok...hopefully...

Polka dot do you keep any rays? Caril sorry about the L200 have you thought about a L128 blue spot instead. These fish sometimes get treated with antibiotics prior to shipping which knocks them about. Would not buy unless fish has been in lfs for at least a few weeks to make sure he is feeding well and settled.
