Hi. I'm just after some info on Whiptail catfish. Not sure exactly what the scientific name of it is as there are so many varieties. Commonly sold here as Whiptail Cat or Royal Whiptail cat. What sort of tank size and tankmates would be suitable?

Stocking limits depend on the max size of the fish,aggressiveness, footprint of tank,airation(sp?), and filteration.

Could you give me some rough limits? I don't want it chockers with whiptail catfish but I would like a few. Our tank will be around three hundred litres, four foot long, something like that. Filtration will be by eheim or fluval cannister.

I would say you could have a good sized group in a 300L.

Get about 7, and will have a good chance of breeding them.

Ok thanks. How about tankmates? What will they be Ok with?

If you plan on breeding them: none, unless they are too small or week to eat the eggs and fry. Maybe something like... danios?

If not, I'm sure you could put some of the less aggressive ciclids in there.

Well the tank is going to be discus and geos most likely. So hopefully they fit in with them, if not I'll put something else.

Sturisoma have been liable to to suck to the sides of discus.

I'm sure Larry will chime in, as he has personal experience of this.

I recently spent 15 mins watching one of my twig cats whallowing (can't really descibe it as swimming) around after one of my discus and latching onto it for brief periods, so I can confirm it does happen. Although the discus didnt seem to mind, he certainly didnt make any efforts to dislodge the twig and didnt seem to be the worse for wear when the twig finally gave up.

I have kept L10a Red Lizard Whiptails (6 of them) in a 240 litre with 5 semi adult discus with no problems
