Hello again,

I'm trying to begin some developmental studies on catfish. Right now our lab has a breeding colony of [i]S. multipunctatus[/i] and [i]S. lucipinnis[/i] but we are looking for more species from other families as outgroups.

The channel catfish has been suggested before, but how much room do they need? Ideally we would like species that are able to be spawned in 100 to 300 or so gallon aquariums.

The Common Ancistrus is not too hard to breed, just as Corydoras aeneus

Ancistrus has very large eggs - over 2 mm, protected by the male. They like dark tanks, with lots of wood, and feed on algae. I think the main problem with Ancistrus for your purpose is that the eggs are not delivered according to your schedule, and will not be easy to find. Its family is Loricaridae

Corydoras aeneus on the other hand depositis its eggs after a water change with colder (2-3 degrees C) water, and they deposit the eggs on the glass in a not too well decorated tank. They are Callichtidae

Perhaps this would be the most suited species for your lab
