Aquarium Salts

I'd always been told that aquarium salt should never be added to a Cory or Pleco community tank. Is this true?
Many people in the hobby are now arguing that a small dose each water change can actually give them a health boost.
Who should I believe?

Hello.
I don't think there is any evidence for this.
Salt can be effectively used to treat a specific illness such as whitespot, but should not be used as a matter of course.
The water these fish are used to in the wild is very low in minerals and salts, and while many species adapt to more mineral rich tapwater, there is no benefit in adding extra salt.
The best way to give fish a health boost is with regular water changes, a good diet and appropriate accommodation.
You have excellent quality tapwater in South Wales with nitrate levels people down in South East England can only dream of.
That is all you need to keep healthy plecs and corydoras.
