I HAVE JUST BEEN TOLD THAT WHAT I THOUGHT WAS A SYNODONTIS NYASSAE IS IN FACT A SYNODONTIS ACANTHOMIAS.I HAVE LOOKED ON THE NET AND AM STILL A BIT CONFUSED. I THINK IT IS NOW A ACANTHOMIAS. ANY VERIFICATION WOULD BE APPRECIATED

Certainly looks like acanthomias. Can you provide some additional details such as TL - it looks a decent size & would in time get far larger than njassae reaches

Sorry what is TL. It is intolerant to any other catfish or bottomfeeder. I cant even keep a pleco because he will try to chase them out of the tank. This seems to match the profile i have read on them. Also it has very spiked gills which are another characteristic that S Nyassae apparantly dont have.
He must be at least 10'' if not 12''. I dont know how big S Nyassae gets but S Acanthomias can get up to 2 foot in the wild but about 12'' in a tank.

TL= total length, i.e. length from tip of snout to tip of tail. I agree that it is S. acanthomias.

I agree it's an acanthomias but I think you're looking at more like 20 inches eventually.

Later edit: I'm not far from London and I'd be interested to know where you got it (even though it was sold as a njassae).

I got it from a small shop in wembley NW London. They always seem to have a couple of big cats in their tanks.I had seen many cats there but when i saw him i ran down the cashpoint.
