Chaetostoma

Post by sabbath »

Picked up a few today. A bit unsure of what species yet, though they look like sp. aff. milesi.

Was wondering: will they be alright housed with ancistrus or L239?

Cat-eLog has this to say about C. sp. aff. milesi ()
This species is from Venezuela, where strict export restrictions make it very unlikely to appear in the trade - and it most [certainly] has never been exported for the trade.
(My correction in brackets)

So, unless it was smuggled out of Venezuela, it's not sp. aff. milesi.

There are dozens of fairly similar species of Chaetostoma and not all the exported ones are described or L-numbered, which doesn't help the identification process.

However, they are fairly common in behaviour and husbandry. Important criteria are: cool water and lots of dissolved oxygen.

I wouldn't recommend keeping it together with , as it's most likely not going to like the higher temperature that the L239 will prefer. The Chaetostoma will prefer temperatures in the low 20'C/70'F range, whilst the L239 prefer the mid-to-high 20'C/70-80'F range.

If you are in Massachusetts, you may want to PM member Bronzefry, who also lives there (Boston area) and has kept Chaetostoma species for a while.

Also, this PC thread may be interesting to you:

especially if there is a PetSmart in your area.

Thank you both.

Deb, I do know Amanda (I think), she is currently raising some Barbatus that I sold at an auction not long ago. I do have a Pet Smart near me, but haven't bought any fish there. Mainly cat litter LOL.

Thanks again to you both.

Rich,
That orange-bronze blotch on the face is quite interesting. Shane knows his Chaetostoma spp. and might be able to identify. I have no idea if that is a Chaetostoma sp. or not. Nice looking fish, though. :D

Yeah, those blotches come and go. I am working on getting some flow in the tank without causing heat from powerheads. I have a tetra luft pump that puts out alot of psi, and was thinking of putting all that air through 1 stone strategically placed. I am also going to move the ancistrus and remove the heater.

Looks like I need to hit the Petsmart! I paid $10 each for mine!

I'm pretty sure that it's a Chaetostoma species - it's got that "rubbermouth" that they are famous for.

Looks like . That gold reflection is usually only seen in fresh caught from the wild specimens.
