Four-lined Pimodella or Pictus
I'm putting together a 55gal for a Jack Dempsey, and a Salvini. Figured a catfish would go nicely. So here I am.
I was thinking a school of 3 pictus cats, or 1 Four-lined Pimodella. My main concern is waste production. Would one large 4 line be as much as 3 pictus?
Are the 4 line schooling?
Suggestions?

I truly wonder if any catfish will be happy with a Jack Dempsey around....
With regard to your dilemma: you'd better choose the 4-lined instead of the pictus. Pictus are too fragile for that set up imo. Take one larger 4-lined (it does school when young, but later on it seems quite happy by itself) and see how things work out. Don't forget to provide hiding places.

I would normally agree, but i have found it does depend very much on the individual, I have an adult Jack Dempsey residing in a tank (for over a year) with many cats, my particular Dempsey is rather peaceful and i have never once seen him cause any trouble to the cats.Marc van Arc wrote:I truly wonder if any catfish will be happy with a Jack Dempsey around....
I would agree on the four-lined pim, they are very active, and perfectly happy on their own when they get larger, but the key to even trying a Jack Dempsey and pims together is providing a lot of hiding places, and i mean more than 3 or 4 hiding places. With plenty of cover and a calm Dempsey you might be ok however as i said before it very much depends on the character of the fish.
I agree with Marc van Arc regarding the pictus, they would be far too fragile for a tank with a Jack Dempsey. But be ready to remove either the cat or the Dempsey in case trouble happens

I can only agree.
I have a pair of Jacks which does not couse any trouble. In fact, I have a pimelodus cf clarias together with Parachromis fridrichstalli, a combination I would not advise anybody, but these Parachromis do not breed, or ficht, or threaten anyone. I even suspect them to dislike fish.
However, knowing what a normal Parachromis would do with a Pimelodus (imagine a very angry fisher)this is not an example
