Here is one with the common name "hoplo".

Looks like them. Any idea if they will eat small fry.I have a planted tank that I was going to move them to but my neolamprologus marunguensis have bred and they have 2 week old fry in there.

They eat "anything" that fits in their mouth. The only thing I know them NOT to eat is vegetables that I use to feed plecos (and even that is sort of borderline). I bought mine at just under 2 inches, and they are a good 3-4" now. Got them shortly before christmas or so - they have more than doubled in size in the 4 months since then.
They don't have very big mouths, so as long as the fry is "big enough", they would be safe. They aren't real predators either, but they will take any oppurtunity to get food.

They'll even the vomit of another fish. (Don't ask me how I know that). And if you try to tempt out a timid plec with an algae wafer, they'll get in the way trying to eat that. Likewise for cucumber, which their mouths aren't at all suitable for.

Hoplo's do NOT belong in ANY tank where a Tanganyikan cichlid is defending it's fry!
for starters: all the wrong waterparameters.
but even more important: it's not the fry that's going to be in danger, but the catfishes....I've seen WAAAYYYYYY too much Hoplo's ripped up and mutilated to death by Riftlake cichlids.
in a Riftlake tank there should be Riftlake catfishes (like Synodontis petricola for example), NOT Hoplo's.
they simply cannot cope with that amount of agression, it will lead to carnage.
ANy cichlid with fry will go berserk at a catfish that's introduced to it. wich is pure instinct and cannot be helped.
just don't do this, for the fishes' sake.

I have to agree on the above comment. Despite their rugged appearance, Callichthyids are very vulnerable in a Riftlake environment.

I too agree - only reason I didn't say anything on that side was that I didn't recognise the species of the cichlid further than "cichlid" - I did trigger once Sidguppy's post came in, so thanks for that addition to the discussion.

I'll set them up properly soon. Put them in a quarantine tank but will get them to another tank with plants in it. I found a small haplo fry in the bag so they are a pair. Read up a bit on them and they build bubble nests with low current. I only have africans so they will get there own tank. They aren't shy and don't hide very much. Thank you again.
