Hi all. Can anyone tell me what this guy is??? I'm thinking it might be African but I've never seen anything quite like him.....

I was thinking Syno but the head shape and compact body throws me a bit.

Oh, it's definitely a deformed Syno; I'm just not completely sure which species.

Mike, you're totally right: it's eupterus and very deformed

hmmmm....Wonder what caused the deformities? I got it as a freebee yesterday from a gent in our local club. He rescued it from someone so I don't know it's history. It's healthy regardless of it's odd shape so I'll keep it around. I have 30 some tanks so there will always be room for it. My kids find him cool regardless.

It is S. eupterus. Some time ago Kochetov named this form Synodontis galinae, but it's a deformed S. eupterus. This kind of thing can happen when you breed hybrids...

After Ferraris the real name is
S. euptera! In his checklist
S. galinae belongs to "Species inquirendae".

Yes, there seems to some dispute about the nomenclature. Not for the first time and certainly not for the last time
