All I have is that they come from the Essequibo system. Are they being imported? I would love to see a photo.

they aren't being imported?
ancistrus hoplogenys and ancistrus leucostictus are fairly common in australia.
i don't know if the are the true leucostictus because i can't find a reliable and recent pic.
the "common" bristlenose in aus is currently unidentified i think...they came in about thirty yrs ago and nobody seems to know their Lno or latin name.
also available are ancistrus ranuculus. very expensive and difficult to get.

there should be some pics there. if not go to: the sydney cichlid page, general cichlid discussion, topic title: peppermint and variant.

That would be A. triradiatus, I think.

had a look...i think the ancistrus sold as "common" in aus are darker than that. but body shape, fins, bristles are all identical.
it could just be colour difference between wild and captive strains. who knows what 30 yrs of captive breeding has done to them.

To my knowledge the "common" bristlenose in Australia are A. temminckii.

What is commonly referred to as A. temminckii is actually A. triradiatus (see
this thread).

If no new Ancistrus have been shipped to Australia in 30 years, you could be correct as most aquarium shipments in the 1970s came out of Guyana. If there have been shipments since then HH is probably correct that they are A. triradiatus.

what did we think of the pics?

I think it depends on your whereabouts.
If Shanes pictures of A. triradiatus in the Cat-eLog shows what A. triradiatus really looks like - then A. triradiatus isn't the A. sp. available at every LFS here in Dk.
In a matter of fact there's 4 A. sp. common in the trade here - one large kind with 8 rays in dorsal and one kind there's a little smaller with 7 rays in a not so big dorsal. Otherwise they look very much alike. The two other kinds is albinos - I believe they are albinos of the two kinds already mentioned.

Klaus,
I am basing the A. triradiatus comments on two things, 1) The VAST majority of Ancistrus photos we receive at Planet Catfish are A. triradiatus and 2) The huge numbers of this Ancistrus sp. exported out of Colombia. Maybe most of these are just ending up in the States and not crossing the ocean.

I understand what you mean.
The misunderstanding might have something to do with the phrase: "common in trade".
I believe what you say, when you say that A. triradiatus is the most common A. sp. exported, but the most common A. sp. here is not imported - it's locally breed (and have been that way for a long long time).
