strange bushy nose

Post by Henry Di Cristofano »

Have a bushy nose or bristlenose since December. Don't know how it survives. Eats nothing - not the algae film on the live plants nor gravel, not algae pellets or cucumber slices. It stays in one spot for days, so much so that I have to nudge it occasionally to see if it's still alive. Has anyone had similar experiences with this fish? The other fish do not seem to bother it. How can I get it to "go to work?"

If it's a regular , then I would expect it to come out for food every now and again. They are more active when it's dark, but they can often be seen active at day-time too.

They don't eat ALL TYPES of algae, so just because you have plenty of algae in the tank, they don't necessarily have a great interest in eating it.

Try zucchini(courgette) slices instead of cucumber.

Also, giving it several hiding places will help it "feel happy" in it's tank, which in turn will make it more active.

Mine like their bogwood, if you have wood in the tank it maybe rasping at that or algae that is on the wood which is hard to see...he has to be eating something!

I have an Ancistrus ranunculus - he is very shy and I hardly ever see him out and about, in fact yours and mine could be brothers, they sound identical  , except mine does wriggle around in his cave, so I know he's alive! My other is an Ancistrus dolichopteris and he is lovely and very sociable when it's feeding time, he rasps the wood and comes to the glass if I tap it gently with my nail!
