Vandellia spawning reported

Hey guys, wasn't sure where to put this. Richard Kik III of Michigan recently had a spawning of a Vandellia species, known to many as "Candiru". Richard is a serious researcher, and has worked as a naturalist with the Detroit Zoo for some time. He's also involved in some research projects involving native Gars. He's currently maintaining 4 species of Trichomycterid Catfish, and just a few months ago, first observed spawning in one of the Vandellia.

Anyway, I heard from a common acquaintance that he had shown video of the spawning at a fish club in Ann Arbor area. Since I know him from some time back, I invited him to do the program at the Southwestern Michigan Aquarium Society's general meeting on April 6, 2007. I just figured that, if anyone is close enough to Kalamazoo, Michigan on that date, they might want to see the program.

I don't get in here very often, but I figured if anyone might want to see this program, it would be PlanetCatfish folks. Sorry if this sounds like a commercial. If you need some more information on how to find the meeting site, check at http://www.swmas.org.

Thank you for posting this..

As a note a detailed report of this spawning as well as husbandry notes about keeping the above fish will be published soon. This is an on going study into the biology of Vandellia and many interesting things seem to pop up daily about them...I have been documenting the husbandry of these fish very carefully as well as experimenting with various aspects of their behavior and natural history.

Some interesting things have come up in this study that has shattered many of the myths about the fish and raised many, many, many more questions as well.
