Planet Catfish Day Out
Posted: 16 Mar 2007, 13:28
by Jools
For some time I've been thinking about and talking to various folks about an organized visit to Pier Aquatics in Wigan. There's maybe enough folks in Scotland and indeed in the central belt specifically, that might make this a fun thing to do.
Maybe sometime after Easter?
So, if this a good idea, are you interested in going?
Would we meet and take a convoy of cars down?
Should I hire a bus?
Should we overnight?
This is just an initial toe in the water, let me know if anyone is interested. Of course, it'd be great if other Planet catfish members from England also chose this day (whenever it is) to also descend on Wigan en masse. It'd be good to meet more forum regulars.

Why not make a day of it and do BAS as well? Sounds a good idea to me.

Yes, it would be sensible to do that especially if its an overnight beforehand but even if we do it in the one day (it's about 3.5 hours from the middle of the M8 to Pier Aquatics) BAS would be a good idea as they have a cafe.

Jools,
BAS no longer have the Cafe facility only a couple of vending machines.

With sufficient planning, I think I may be able to take part in this one.

on the other hand,, you could come down this Saturday, stay over night,, get up early, visit pier in Wigan,
Then onto BAS in Bolton, then head for dinner at The Highfield working mens club in Darwen, and whilst there bid on a few things at the CSG spring auction, which is being held at the same location, Oh! yes and the Bar will be open..

i might be able to make it depending on how busy business is down here when you've got a day set.

Like the idea Adrian, shame I got so much to do at home.....
If people so want to make a weekend of it, the The Britannia Hotel in Standish where we had the CSG convention would be a convenient place for people to stay I think?

Yeah, however there are cheaper options - depends on what people want to do. Doesn't seem to be the interest from north of the border that I thought might exist.
Getting around the shops on Saturday means everyone could have a chat about what they planned to buy over an evening's beer and then we could go get them on Sunday and bring them home. In my experience, if a group (say more than 5) people arrive at a store and want to buy fish, it can take hours to get everything done and dusted.

Hey Marc. Always on the look out for big jaguars. But have to say that if I come across anything like T. Fisheri (you reviewed recently), think I would be very tempted. Its a beautiful fish and I've yet to see one.
Going on holiday later today, get back on 3rd. Looking forward to this trip to Pier.

I'd be up for a day trip down to Wigan/Bolton. Could probably pick up a couple of folk on the way down.
Obviously depends what date is chosen.

There seem to be a plethora of Oncinus at the moment in the uk if you know where to look. My redecorating is driving me mad with the amount of things going wrong & the time it's taken as all my fish are at my LFS & i feel loke somethings missing in my life! Still a good photo opportunity exists when i pick them up in about 10-15 days.
All
I'd really be interested in the trip to Pier/BAS, primarily to meet everyone else from the forums & have a good chat. Please keep me posted on this

I'm happy to take "hitchhikers" from southern england, as long as it doesn't add too many miles to my journey (obviously only if I can make it in the first place).
Jools, can you avoid the wekeend of the 15th of April, as that's my sons birthday.

Yes, the weekend of the 15th of April is also my brother's Birthday, so that's out. I guess we could just fix a date and go for it?

I'm just off the M40, so I shouldn't be too far out of the way
The weekend of the 7th/8th of April is best for me.
My wallet will need to be secured under lock and key though......

Hi Jools,
sorry I took so long to get back to you...
yes in theory that sounds good to me too. 2 things are just the date and how much cash I can hide between now and then ;)

How about the weekend 12th/13th March? We'll meet up Saturday morning, drive down, spend plenty of time in both shops and retreat to a motel (with bar...) and plan what fish we fancy going for.
Sunday morning, full English and then we can go get the fish we've planned to buy (no rushed decisions).
How does that sound to everyone. Please note I'm happy to organise a meeting / carpool on the Saturday of the Scottish contingent - probably somewhere like Harthill or Bellshill.
