. Telling them apart without disecting the fish may be difficult.

That would be the case with Synodontis polli and s ilebrevis.
petricola and lucipinnis are fairly easy to tell apart when adult; it's difficult when they're smaller than 1,5-2".
petricola is much more elongated and as adult a bit darker, less contrasting.
petricola has a wide mouth and a larger lip, the mouth of a lucipinnis is more narrow
but easiest to see is the body pattern.
lucipinnis has an uneven pattern made of larger and smaller spots on the body. petricola has an even pattern of many small spots or fewer but still a lot bigger spots. these spots are all the same size too, unlike lucipinnis.
