Hi Pennykate,
I can't answer your first question, but can the second.
Clown and Ancistrus (Bristlenose/Bushynose) get along fine. Both are in the smaller end of plecos. Ancistrus tend to get a little more agressive than some when it comes to feeding time, but have never seen them cause any actual damage, and the size of clowns makes them a little more prone to being bullied. As for their hiding, clown like to hide, it's in their nature. For the most part they are not an outgoing catfish. If you want to see them more, providem them with LOTS of hiding places, and lots of wood. This makes them feel more comfortable in coming out, as they have addes security of being able to run and hide when they feel threatened.
Hope this helps,
